Hollywood Should Let the Crow Rest

Lon Chaney, The Man of a Thousand Faces

November 17, 2007

If you haven’t heard or read, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series is being done into graphic novel format by Marvel with Jim Lee doing the artwork. It is due out February of 2007. You can read about it and see some of the artwork here.

November 14, 2006

Horror-Movies.ca has the poster of Hannibal Rising on its site. Based on Thomas Harris’ novel Behind the Mask which tells the story of Hannibal’s youth and how the Hannibal we know came to be. Actually the tale is quite fascinating and unique starting in Lithuania to Paris, then the U.S.

Peter Webber is directing and Thomas Harris did the screen play.

Blood and Chocolate, a teenage angst werewolf movie is due out in 2007. The premise is a love story between a human and a female werewolf as well as a string of murders that may expose the pack she belongs to.

Agnes Bruckner and Hugh Dancy star and Katja von Garnier directs.  The Horror Channel gives a review of the novel the film is based upon.

You have now probably heard that Jack Palance has died of natural causes at 87. Though winning an Oscar for best supporting actor in a comedy was his recent claim to fame, many forget that he also played Dracula as well as Dr. Jeckle/Mr. Hyde and played the villainous gun slinger in SHANE.  Cast as a heavy in many films, Palance was the perfect choice to play Jack Nicholson’s boss Gissom in BATMAN. Burton said he chose Palance because he needed an actor who could be intimidating to Nicholson.  That is a huge compliment to Palance’s presence on the screen.

Peter Straub’s novel KOKO is being drafted by screen writer Ken Nolan, Black Hawk Down. KOKO is a story about surviving Vietnam Veterans that suspect one of their own has turned serial killer.

Now I haven’t seen SAW III, honestly I will wait until it shows up on DvD, but I loved FEAST. Seems that the writers that scribed FEAST will pen SAW IV. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan.

November 8, 2006

Neil Gaiman has stated on his blog that the Stardust movie has been moved up to March-July of 2007. Evidently the rough cut of the movie is complete and Paramount is pleased.

The cast includes Robert DeNiro, Peter O’Toole and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Ghost House Pictures has a video blog from director David Slade who is at work on 30 Days of Night. Josh Harnett is slated for the part of the sheriff. The site also has a lot of information concerning other rumored projects such as the notorious Evil Dead remake. I suppose it is now official that it is on, since it is listed on the site and as this being the official site for Sam Rami’s Ghost House Pictures, then we will see it. The question is who would be Ash, no one can top the King that I can think of.

The Messengers is Rami’s production company’s latest endeavor that will be released this February. Now this is only Rami producing, not directing. From the teaser it seems to be another pre-teen/teen horror flick of the PG variety.  Standard formula Ghost Story about a family freaking out about the child seeing creepy things. After the disappointing Bogey Man,  it seemed to me that Rami was interested in only turning out what I would call maybe Hallmark Horror. Nothing visceral and all lights and magic with no atmosphere.

Maybe 30 Days of Night might salvage my opinion. Having read the graphic novel I am excited to see this one come to film. Also, maybe Rami will helm another horror movie and not just produce one. We can only wait and see. Below is a quote from Harnett about the upcoming film:

In a recent interview at Coming Soon.net with star Josh Harnett he revealed the following about the film: "It's less of a horror movie. You saw 'Alien,' right?" Hartnett asked. "It's like that. It's kind of a supernatural, but kind of a western, you know, in that genre. It's all about being on the edge. The outskirts of society. Having to create your own society with an outside element creating massive fear and panic. Most of the film you don't even know they're vampires." Also, Danny Huston has been added to the cast as the leader of a horde of vampires.

November 6, 2006

Guillermo Del Toro has new images by William Stout for his adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountain of Madness.  This is where you can view Mr. Stout’s concepts.

Del Toro also mentions HellBoy II, "The heart of the film is that fantasy has been grounded by reality," del Toro said. "It's been ground to dust by reality. Hellboy is fighting for the humans, but he starts realizing that maybe not everything is right in the way that he does things."

On another note, something really insane, someone is trying to remake Near Dark.  How could anyone even contemplate re-capturing the flavor of the first? Also the cast was perfect, you can’t get any better than Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and the rest….Matt Venne, who submitted the screen play for believe it or not, White Noise 2 is penning the screen play. I am sorry,  there is no way they can recapture the mood, the cast or the feel of the original.

Rob Zombie, if you haven’t heard is to direct the next installment of Halloween.  Here is the official site with
an interview with Zombie himself.

November 5, 2006

It is obvious that it has been a long time since this section was updated. I will be updating in the next few weeks some information concerning upcoming movies of interest.

February 17, 2006

Obviously been awhile since I have done any updates. Something happened though that did rather give me some initiative to return. Caught something on C.H.U.D. that really set me off. Seems like Devin ranted on one of my favorite sites, Batman On Film. Now not only does Jett do alot of work sorting through various rumors and maintaining updates on a consistent basis, he is also a great guy.

I shot him of an email as follows:

~Don't like it, don't go there. By the way, Jett was more right than anyone about Batmn Begins....jealous? ~

Of course his response was rather lame :

~Since the movie wasn't very good, no~

I responded to him that he had lost a reader. I mean come on, whether he liked the movie or not, him ranting on a site sorting through rumors had to be out of a sense of envy or something. To mention Jett's site by name and then rag on it, when C.H.U.D. has been wrong about things in the past can't help but make me feel like professional jealousy is involved. Can one say you are being transparent Devin?

Oh, I also removed their link from resources.

September 11, 2005

Posted Police Officer Lance's review of Batman Begins. Nice one Officer...give me more =)

Also the timing on the review is good because BatmanOnFilm has reported that Nolan WILL direct the sequel. Though not official, BOF is seldom wrong and really is catious about announcing news. It is the only real trustworthy site concerning the Batman Films...thanks Jett!

August 15, 2005

Paramount has pulled the plug on the Watchmen. Whether due to budget or conflicts of interests is hard to say as of yet.

Ain't It Cool News has a review of the Brother's Grimm. It is pretty negative, but given the site's rather colorful reviews of films, I still will check this one out myself.

August 14, 2005

The Hollywood Reporter states that Sarah Michelle Gellar will take on the role of Alice in the movie version of the popular PC game, American McGee's Alice. Having played the game, it is wonderfully twisted and full of potential.

August 4, 2005

On the Alan Moore web site, Straczynski reviews the script for V and bashes the review that was posted on Ain't It Cool News. It is interesting if not a tad amusing. Straczynski, who wrote and created Babylon 5 says the script is genius , the following is a quote:

""I think it's one of the smartest, sharpest, insightful and well-crafted scripts I've ever read. It's emotional, evocative, heart-rending, biting, sharp, relentless and just plain garden variety powerful. It's not just a good film, it's an *important* film, and there's a great deal of subtlety and nuance in it that was clearly lost on the idiot that read the script so he could make fun of it and stir the pot. "

July 28, 2005

Maybe alittle off tangent, maybe not considering that he was the original Man in Black. Walk the Line has a new trailer, the bio pic of Johnny Cash starring Joaquin Phoenix, who sings all the songs himself and actually learned to play the guitar from scratch for this role. One thing that is certain, Cash transcended genre, becoming a folk legend.

July 27, 2005

Woot! Official Site for the Brother's Grim, Terry Gilliam's upcoming flick is up. The trailer looks like it just might meet expectations. It is starring Heath Ledger and Matt Damon. Told you I would watch out for this one.

July 26, 2005

Guy Pearce, the much rumored canidate for Two Face, has signed on to play Houdini in the movie Death Defying Acts. Rachel Weisz will costar.I am actually pretty interested in this. Houdini was a remarkable man. There have already been a few film versions of his life, but nothing in recent years. According to Variety, it is a drama, but also will focus on a relationship with a woman he meets in Scotland. Now this could be more love story than drama, if so it is a pass...but who knows. I will keep an eye on it.

The first season of Tales From the Crypt is going to DvD. Here is the official site.

The trailer for the remake of John Carpenter's The Fog is online. The trailer looks impressive. It also makes me want to go out and get the original. It is an interesting choice for a remake. Also, it will be hard to top the original but with special effects evolving since the original...maybe...but the Fog is vintage Carpenter. Style is better than effects. Have to wait and see.

July 25, 2005

The trailer for V is now online.

I put up a new review for the DVD release of Constantine.

July 20, 2005

Alan Moore is distancing himself from the adaptation of "V" and also severed ties with D.C. comics. Moore has his reasons it seems. Just visti his website from more details. Personally, I don't blame Moore for wanting to remove himself after the fiasco of League of Extraordinary Gentlmen. It seems that he is also voicing his disaproval of the adaptation of the "Watchmen".

Granted, Moore can be radical at times. He is also very vocal with his chastisement of the Hollywood machine. Especially Joel Silver who is producing V along with the Wachowski Brothers who are penning the screen play. A quote from his fan site: ""It was imbecilic; it had plot holes you couldn't have got away with in Whizzer And Chips in the nineteen sixties. Plot holes no one had noticed."

July 17, 2005

Another trailer for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

New trailer for the Exorcism fo Emily Rose is now up on the official site.

Ain't It Cool News has a review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

July 1, 2005

The forthcoming film adaptation of Alan Moore's Vendetta site is live. I didn't know that Hugo Weaving is playing V. Interesting.

New trailer for MirrorMask, the new film collaboration between Gaiman and McKean.

June 26, 2005

KongIsKing.net has posted a trailer of the upcoming Kong movie by Peter Jackson. It is a short snippet but it does give one a feel of the atmosphere.

After hearing that Sam Rami was considering 30 Days of Night, I was able to read the graphic novel via a friend at work. It is actually quite good and also a very good choice for Rami. The question is will this new main stream Rami be able to do a horror movie with the same kind of grit he was able to with the Evil Dead series? Bogeyman was definitely not a good example.

June 19, 2005

Just posted my review of Batman Begins.

April 13, 2005

There are pics on line now of the new set of wheels for the Ghost Rider movie. It looks impressive.

More new set pictures from the Brother's Grimm!

If you haven't see these yet, you must. The new trailers for the Batman move. This is really going to rule the summer. I can't wait.

April 2, 2005

Posted review of Sin City.

March 30, 2005

There is a new trailer for the Devil's Rejects, Rob Zombie's sequel to House of 1000 Corpses.

DarkHorizons.com has posted news about the forthcoming extended version of David Lynch's Dune. Seems like Lynch will be involved with the extended version and the DVD will include the theatrical release as well.

March 25, 2005

The OneRIng.net is posting some polystone statue pics from Weta of the upcoming King Kong movie by Peter Jackson. I know allot of people scoffed when Jackson decided to take on the King, but from the look of these statues, I think he will impress us once again.

I told you I was going to keep an eye on this one. Ain'titCoolNews has linked to a site showing drawings for the Brother's Grimm movie by Terry Gilliam.

March 24, 2005

Ain't It Cool News has a review of the Devil's Rejects, Rob Zombie's sequel of the House of a 1000 Corpses as well as an interview with Zombie itself.

CHUD has been running a three part interview with Paul Greengrass, the director of the upcoming Watchman movie. This is part 3 of the interview. Here he talks about Bourne as well. Interesting read.

The BatmanBegins site now has a new flash interface. Also take a look at the new poster.

March 23, 2005

Bloodynews.com has posted two reviews of Paul Schrader's Exorcist Prequel. This is the version Morgan Creek shelfed and hired Renny Harlin to reshoot a more gore infested version. It seems like the exec's had more pea soup related material they wanted to add in.

Both reviewers agree that the Schrader version, the one we may never see, is the superior version in style and story telling. Perhaps is there are more reviews like the ones on Bloodynews, then just maybe we will get the original version on DvD.

Here is a trailer of the original Schrader version along with some stills. This is a link to the opening sequence with Nazi soldiers of the Schrader version. Thank you Bloodynews and the Creature Corner for making this available on the web.

March 20, 2005

Ain't It Cool News has some reviews of Sin CIty.

There is a new War of the Worlds trailer posted on the movie's web site. WaroftheWorlds.com

Devin Faraci, from CHUD has posted a partial review of the version of the Exorcist prequel that we have not seen and may yet get on DvD. Paul Schrader's version, the one originally filmed then shelfed by Morgan Creek, has been viewed in Brussels. Here is Faraci's article.

March 15, 2005

Seems like the rumor about Quentin doing Friday the 13th is false. I found this on CHUD...a quote from Tarantino.

What’s happening with Friday The 13th? Nothing at all! It’s a complete lie. I like Jason and everything, but I’ve no intention of directing a movie! New Line talked to me about it, but it was a complete fabrication, that article. I would love to do a horror film. I’m just saying it’s not going to be Friday The 13th…”

March 10, 2005

Peter Fonda will play the part of Mephistopheles in Ghost Rider starring along side Nicholas Cage. The film will also star veteran actor Sam Elliot, who seldom dissapoints. Ghost Rider of course is based on the marvel comic about Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt man who becomes the Ghost Rider.

Looks like Sinbad is returning for an 8th Voyage with Keanu Reeves in talks for the title role. Rob Cohen is set to direct this Columbia film.

The cult hit Phantasm may be returning to the screen. Don Coscarelli and New Line Cinema are in talks concerning the prodject. With a decent budget and effects this might just might be a remake worth doing. It also shows though, that Hollywood is struggling for new material. With the Fog being remade and now Amityville Horror , it seems that the horror market is still alive but hurting for source material so they are mining the past as they have done with the TV series onslaught we have suffered recently. Phantasm though may just be worth the remake. It did create its own mythos with the Tall Man and the orb. The imagination was definitely there in the originals but the budget was obviously lacking.

I saw this one on Sideshow.com and I still don't know what to think about it. Quentin Tarantino is considering directing and writing the next installment of the Friday the 13th series. He is reportedly in talks with New Line Cinema, this would be his first movie outside of Miramax.

March 8, 2005

The Prophecy series maybe coming back with new installments. This tidbit I found on UpcomingHorrorMovies.com:
Doug Brady<aka Pinhead>quote: ~We went back to Romania in the spring of last year to shoot those. I actually only appear in part five as a photograph of a corpse, ’cause I meet an unseemly end in part four, in which I play a Romanian policeman. We have a pretty strong cast—Tony Todd is in it, though mostly in part five, same with Jason Scott Lee, and also Kari Wuhrer, Stephen Billington is playing one of the angels, Sean Pertwee is in it, so it’s a good cast. Joel Soisson [producer of the entire PROPHECY series] directed both of them." He then went on to reveal a little on the story... "It’s fairly familiar in terms of the PROPHECY mythology as established in the earlier films. It continues the battle of the angels, the fallen angels; Lucifer is among them this time, and Belial, Lucifer’s old adversary, is pursuing him and flitting from host to host. He inhabits a variety of bodies as the film goes on, and mine becomes the last of his temporary resting places. It centers on an ongoing Book of Revelations, the idea being that Revelations was not the last word of the Bible—that it goes on, and is writing itself. It’s a pretty cool story." ~

cast reported: Kari Wuhrer Sean Pertwee Jason Scott Lee Doug Bradley Lance Henricksen John Light Jason London: Release date is reported June of 2005. This is reportedly being followed by a 5th installment, Prophecy: Forsaken.

Sam Rami is also reportedly producing a vampire western entitled "Priest". No director has been chosen yet. Also Rami is producing a comic book adaption of another vampire flick "30 Days of Night."

March 2, 2005

Posted a review of the Machinist starring Christian Bale.

February 27, 2005

For the best information on the upcoming Batman film starring Christian Bale I highly recomend Batman on Film.

New rumors are floating about about Evil Dead 4. Apparently Sam Rami has stated that he would love to do an Evil Dead 4 and that it would star Bruce Campbell as Ash of course. With all the clout that Rami has in Hollywood due to the Spiderman movies, he might just do it.
~"I'd like to one day," he said. "I can't promise that I will, but that is something I'd really like to do, and I'd like to pursue that. My brother and I have written down some ideas, but I think that's what we'll do. When the time comes, when we're done with the
Spider-Man films, we'll sit down and write the script~

This one I am watching closely, seem that Hammer films is making a come back. These seem to be films that will be straight to video, but with the legacy of Hammer behind them I am anxious to see what they turn out. Hammer Returns! Hammer Films

There is another Crow film to be released later this year. The Crow: Wicked Prayer will star Edward Furlong and David Boreanaz aka Angel. How many times must hollywood learn that there was only one Crow and that was Eric Draven....sigh. Soon I am going to write an editoral on the original Crow movie and graphic novel and why hollywood should leave well enough alone.

Remember the Fog from John Carpenter? Seems that it is also due to be remade under the direction of Rupert Wainwright, has set filming dates of March 14th thru May 16th at Lion’s Gate Film Studios. Don't know...but I hope they do it justice.

On April 15 seems that we will be treated to a remake of the original Amityville Horror. The original did have a impact in its day spawning sequels that were embarrassing. Is this hollywood's next franchise attempt? Or, will this pay more homage to the original as well as the story itself? For those of you that do not remember the Amityville Horror was allegedly based on true events. Those events of course are up for debate and actually have been since the release of the original. Either way, the original movie did have its share of creepiness. However, the result was worse the Jason franchise...and that is pretty bad.

Release date has been announced for The Brothers Grim to be in Nov of 2005. This is Terry Gilliam's latest project and will star Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Johnathan Pryce and rumored Robin Williams. The latter two, Pryce and Williams are to portray evil masterminds. This is a fantastic cast. I have been a fan of Pryce since Something Wicked This Way Comes and Ledger since the Order. Add Robin Williams along with Gilliam's visual style and you have a classic in the making. This one I am very excited about. The production is sporting a 75 million dollar budget.

James Wong and Glenn Morgan from Millenium and Space Above and Beyond fame as remaking the TV movie Don't be afraid of the Dark. I remember the original and it was very sinister especially for TV. The original starred Jim Hutton, Timothy Hutton's father, and Kim Darby. The pair played newly weds that purchased a house with a history in the woods that was inhabited by some very sinister little creatures. The shower scene was especially creepy. Hopefully they will do it the same justice and Wong and Morgan did with the remake of Willard.

Samuel Hadida, producer of the Brotherhood of the Wolf, is going to bring us Robert E. Howards' more obscure creation Solomane Kane. The swashbuckling puritan that roamed the countryside fighting creatures of the night. Solomane Kane is actually a very interesting creation of Howard's with heavy influence from his friend Howard Philips Lovecraft.
